22 Aug GP not A&E in East Grinstead
Did you know all children aged 0-5 years and who are registered with an East Grinstead GP can access same day appointments?
If you are concerned about your child’s health and need urgent but not emergency help or advice, contact your local East Grinstead GP. If registered with one of the four practices, they can provide your child – aged five years and under – with a same day appointment.
Dr Stephen Bellamy, East Grinstead GP and Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) locality lead for Mid Sussex, said:
As part of our #GPnotA&E campaign we want to ensure parents receive the right care in the right place and don’t spend time waiting in A&E or elsewhere, when they don’t need to. Children can receive the care they need right here in our local community.
Dr Bellamy added:
As part of the campaign we are keen to bust some frequent myths surrounding GP care in East Grinstead. The big one is obviously that you will struggle to get a same day, urgent appointment. For children aged 0-5 registered with a GP in East Grinstead this is simply not the case. Working in partnership, all East Grinstead GP Practices now provide same day appointments when a parent is worried about their child’s health.
Other myths busted as part of the #GPnotA&E campaign include:
- Myth: You cannot sign up very young children with a GP practice. Fact: You can sign your baby up by using the pink card you’ll be given when you register your baby’s birth. If you want the GP to see your baby before you’ve registered the birth, you can go to the surgery and fill in a registration form there. If you move, register with a new doctor close to you as soon as possible. Don’t forget If you are the parent of a child aged 0-5 registered to a GP practice in #EastGrinstead you are guaranteed a same day appointment. See NHS Choices for more information www.nhs.uk/Conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/Pages/services-support-for-parents.aspx
- Myth: If I get a same day appointment, I’ll be hanging about for hours in the waiting room. Fact: On average, children waiting for an emergency appointment were seen in under 30 minutes after arrival, with the majority seen under 15 minutes after arrival. The East Grinstead GP Practices try and fit children in around other appointments, so most will not have to wait to be seen at the end of the day. We work hard to ensure that quality of care is the same for our first patient of the day as for our last.
- Myth: If I get a same day appointment, I’ll end up seeing a GP at the end of their shift who has already worked very long hours and the quality of care will be poor.
- Fact: The East Grinstead GP Practices try and fit children in around other appointments, so most will not have to wait to be seen at the end of the day. We work hard to ensure that quality of care is the same for our first patient of the day as for our last.
Of course your GP practice is not always the answer. There are many other local services which can provide the care you and your family needs. As part of the #GPnotA&E campaign, all East Grinstead GP Practices now stock postcards for you to keep handy at home, listing local services from late night pharmacies to our local minor injuries unit.
