Sunday 15 August – “Essential travel only” warning due to emergency work on the Brighton Main Line

Emergency work to replace two damaged rails on the Brighton Main Line this coming Sunday means passengers on the route are being urged to only travel only if absolutely essential this Sunday morning.

Engineers will start work late on Saturday night between East Croydon and Redhill, replacing rails with hidden defects spotted by Network Rail’s ultrasonic test train. Leaving those defects unfixed could result in a broken rail.

For that reason, from around midnight to 2pm on Sunday there will be major changes to train services on the route. There will be an extremely limited train service with only one train every 90 minutes between London and Brighton. Challenges with bus driver availability due to COVID and major engineering work on other routes means only a very limited replacement bus service will run between Redhill and East Croydon.

It comes on top of major engineering work between Three Bridges and Arundel planned from Saturday, 14 August to Sunday, 22 August, when £22m will be invested to improve stations and replace old signalling and track. Passengers travelling on the Arun Valley line over the nine days are advised to plan ahead and allow more time for their journeys.

IMPORTANT PASSENGER ADVICE
